Guests onboard the cruise where the man went missing reported multiple public address announcements were made in an attempt to locate the passenger, but no further information was made available. Matt Lupoli, a spokesperson for Carnival, told CBS News that the man was at a bar with his sister on Wednesday night, and he disappeared after leaving to use the restroom. His sister, whose identity has also not been made public, alerted crew to his absence when he did not return to his stateroom overnight. About 20 miles south of Southwest Pass, Louisiana, the crew of bulk carrier CRINIS was scanning the water, the Coast Guard said Friday in a news release. On Sept. 4 and searched 3,300 square nautical miles with helicopters but found nothing, according to Petty Officer Ryan Estrada, in Miami.

The Coast Guard is searching for a man who jumped overboard from a Carnival cruise ship, officials said. An alert went out to all mariners in the gulf, and the Coast Guard "launched all available resources," Lt. Seth Gross, a search and rescue coordinator for the USCG told CNN on Friday morning. At noon the next day -- Thanksgiving Day -- she reported him missing, the statement said.
The incident was the second time in two months that a person went overboard on a Carnival cruise ship off the coast of Florida. A 35-year-old Virginia man apparently fell off the Carnival Magic about 186 miles east of Jacksonville in late May. The Coast Guard called off the search without success in early June. "If not for the alert crew aboard the motor vessel CRINIS, this case could have had a much more difficult ending," he said in the news release.
The ship’s overboard detection system never went off, and there is no other evidence that Kevin McGrath went overboard, according to the MDPD. According to authorities, Kevin McGrath was last seen around 2 a.m. “It makes you feel crazy to be stuck on a ship where everyone else is having a good time. It was supposed to be a vacation, but for us, it’s hell,” she told the outlet.
“At this point, I can't really say because it was verified that he did not go overboard, and he did not get off the ship via the (pass) being scanned,” Sean McGrath said. Miami-Dade police said they also had detectives go on board to investigate but after reviewing surveillance cameras and overboard alerts, nothing was found and the all-clear was given to depart. His sister, Destiny Barnett, told NBC News that she and 13 other relatives also were on the cruise. Reid said Carnival initially told her daughter, who was on the trip, that there was no video of the incident – and she added that she didn’t find out Barnett was missing until a cousin messaged her. She said the Port St. Lucie community where she and her brother are from has been offering "a lot of love" to the family. U.S. Customs and Border Control told Carnival Kevin McGrath was not detected during the debarkation process, NBC Miami reported.
After McGrath could not be found on board, the Coast Guard was contacted, and Miami police officers arrived to investigate, Carnival said. At 855 feet long, nearly 72,000 tons and staffed with 900 crewmembers, the Carnival Elation can carry nearly 2,200 guests.
